Ebook About
First in a delightfully charming crime series set in 1930s Singapore, introducing amateur sleuth Su Lin, a local girl stepping in as governess for the Acting Governor of Singapore.1936 in the Crown Colony of Singapore, and the British abdication crisis and rising Japanese threat seem very far away. When the Irish nanny looking after Acting Governor Palin's daughter dies suddenly - and in mysterious circumstances - mission school-educated local girl Su Lin - an aspiring journalist trying to escape an arranged marriage - is invited to take her place. But then another murder at the residence occurs and it seems very likely that a killer is stalking the corridors of Government House. It now takes all Su Lin's traditional skills and intelligence to help British-born Chief Inspector Thomas LeFroy solve the murders - and escape with her own life.'Simply glorious. Every nook and cranny of 1930s Singapore is brought richly to life, without ever getting in the way of a classic puzzle plot. But what's a setting without a jewel? Chen Su Lin is a true gem. Her slyly witty voice and her admirable, sometimes heartbreaking, practicality make her the most beguiling narrator heroine I've met in a long while.' Catriona McPherson'Charming and fascinating with great authentic feel. Ovidia Yu's teenage Chinese sleuth gives us an insight into a very different culture and time. This book is exactly why I love historical novels.' Rhys Bowen

Book The Frangipani Tree Mystery (Crown Colony) Review :

I was in the mood for a historical mystery set in an exotic locale, and Ovidia Yu's first Crown Colony mystery set in 1936 Singapore fit the bill nicely. The setting of The Frangipani Tree Mystery is worth the price of admission alone, but there is so much more to the book than its time period and location that I'm really looking forward to reading further in the series.Even though I found the identity of the killer to be much too easily deduced, I fell in love with the character-- and the voice-- of young Chen Su Lin. Since she has a withered leg, orphaned Su Lin's prospects are grim according to her uncle who insists on parading one bribed and unattractive suitor after another past her. Luckily Su Lin's grandmother has insisted that Su Lin be educated, and it's this education as well as the influence of the mission school's head teacher that has made the young woman yearn for the freedom to do as she chooses. As Su Lin spoke, I kept hearing very faint traces of Laurie R. King's wonderful character, Mary Russell. And if there's a Mary Russell, there should be a Sherlock Holmes, right? There is, in the newly-appointed Chief Inspector Thomas LeFroy. LeFroy is determined to use his wits and British know-how to ferret out any corruption in the police force and to put an end to crime in Singapore's streets. British he may be, but he's not the snobbish sort of Englishman. He speaks the language, appreciates the culture, and knows the traditions of the city in which he lives. And it doesn't take him long to realize that Su Lin is one very valuable young woman indeed. Originally hired to work as LeFroy's housekeeper, the inspector can readily see how important she can be to him as an informant in the acting governor's household. With characters and a setting such as these, it's no wonder I'm looking forward to the next book in the series!
In a good way, this book reminded me of the Anne Perry mystery series with Charlotte Ellison (young society woman) and Inspector Thomas Pitt. I think the resemblance is that place and time are both important and the detective finds an unlikely ally in a young woman of a different class. There is also a whiff of potential romance!Set in Singapore in 1936, the author explores the tensions in an Asian country ruled by England and the clash among classes and nationalities. Teen Su Lin is being educated at the mission school, overseen by Vanessa Palin who is the sister of the acting governor. Su Lin is living with her grandmother after her parents die. She had polio that left her with a limp. She is considered “bad luck” but her grandmother is trying to marry her off anyway. Su Lin would rather have a job as a journalist. Miss Palin has other ideas and tries to get her hired as a housekeeper for the British police inspector, Thomas LeFroy. He is less than enthusiastic. Luckily for Su Lin, the nanny to the governor’s daughter dies under mysterious circumstances. Su Lin is quickly hired as the nanny. She joins the Palin household that includes Miss Palin, Governor Henry Palin, his second wife Mary, his son Harry, and daughter Dee-Dee. Dee-Dee has the mind and behavior of a 7 year old in a young adult’s body. While caring for Dee-Dee, Su Lin decides that this is the perfect opportunity to try out her journalistic and detective skills. Then another death occurs, the mystery deepens and Su Lin fears for Dee-Dee’s life and her own. This book is a delight through and through! The mystery itself is pretty good. The writing seems effortless and the author brings the atmosphere of Singapore to life. The story is narrated by Su Lin, told after many years have passed. She has a wonderful voice and interesting observations about the other characters and also about class differences. This is the first in a series and I plan to read more from the excellent Ovidia Yu.
